Symbols, in the form of strings of ones and zeroes, are the fundamental stuff of computation. John Sowa combines Peirce's notion of existential graphs with a related idea known as a semantic network into a construct known as a conceptual graph. Part of my job at Semantic Research is to marry semiotics to a software-based semantic network representation. Semiotic systems often evoke the creation of ontologies to facilitate communication of knowledge across system or existential boundaries.
