The maqsoum (sometimes spelled maqsum, maksoom or maksoum) is a traditional Egyptian 4/4 rhythm. It is commonly heard in bellydance music. The simple maqsoum is the basis of many modern and folk Egyptian rhythms, such as beledi and saidi. If you listen to Middle Eastern percussion accompanying music you will often hear the distinctive beat or one of its many derivatives.
In its most basic form it plays like this:
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
