Monday night: After we finished setting up camp and had dinner, we got on bikes and explored BRC with most of the Rez. Came back before the lunar eclipse and crashed. I woke up in the middle of the night and ended up seeing the eclipse after all. It was a first for me, and very beautiful.

Tuesday 8/28. Discovery: THE MAN BURNT DURING THE LUNAR ECLIPSE! It was arson. Someone had ignited it last night while the guards were distracted by the eclipse. The arsonist, Paul Addis, was arrested.

After breakfast, Heather and I went to check it out.

Crispy Man, Cajun-Blackened Man, etc. etc.

Perimeter is sealed. Heather looks on.

Man and structure beneath no longer stable. DPW raced to repair it all before Saturday. And they did.

We gave out Project Swirl dog tags and CFL bulbs to the people we found there. This was fun. These are true playa gifts that help save the world, not just useless blinky trinkets.

Speaking of saving the world. A few weeks earlier, Arrow told me that his HelixWind wind turbine prototypes would be on the playa, helping to power the Man. I really wanted to see them in action. We discovered them right near the Man on the 3:00 side.

This was the first time I'd seen these units in person. They performed very well, even during the wild dust storms and intense wind that came later in the week.

These two prototypes made their debut appearance on the playa this year. Aren't they gorgeous?
