[edit] RLD Return
Oh, almost forgot. Back at the Man, we saw the wind turbines in the dust storm. They were spinning like crazy--it was great! The SkyStream wind turbine, the main competitor to HelixWind, was right between them. Not turning. At all.
Walked from 10:00 to 4:30 along the Esplanade. It was a whiteout the whole way, and saw nothing of this side of the city; I could barely open my eyes. Heather and I gradually made progress. We ran into Amaya and her man near Center Camp, which was nice.
Eventually we got back. We hung out at camp, had a few snacks, drank gallons of water. I decided not to drink today. I think it's part of why my mood had been so foul all day. Sucks, because Bad-Dawg is opening a big keg of homebrew. Hope there's some left tomorrow. We're out of beer. Heather thinks someone stole the last of it.
[edit] RLD DJ Stage Slip 'n' Slide
Another big dust storm in camp! This one came with rain. We rode it out in the van. Arrow dropped by. He opened the van door and all I saw was his goggles and bandana under a floppy khaki hat. Who the fuck was this? It looked like Hunter S. Thompson at the Mint 500.
Later, we went out to the RLD stage area; the van got too stuffy. We heard whooping and energetic music from the stage, and the tarps in front of the stage were slick with rain--a big Slip 'n' Slide! People slid across it and an impromptu group of judges formed spontaneously, complete with handwritten 1-10 signs. It was damn funny.
Mud wrestling broke out. It looked like a a bunch of dirty naked hippies from Woodstock. (Note: Despite mainstream media reports, most burners are not hippies and in fact loathe them!) The music was just pumping. People came to us from the streets, and a crowd formed.

[edit] Friday Night
We had dinner. As it grew darker, plans formed to see the Mutaytor show out by Crude Awakenings (the oil derrick art installation out on the playa.) The derrick was to burn down dramatically after the show. As it turned out, the whole thing was rescheduled to Saturday night, after the burning of the Man, due to the dust storms having delayed the fire safety crew for Crude Awakenings. There was widespread skepticism about this... the more likely reason being that they wanted to outdo the Man.
Got a visit from Maeve. She'd been volunteering for medical. She had some nasty stories. Suicide, two deaths from being run over accidentally by art cars, a couple stabbings and sexual assaults. Not pretty.
